After the second round of the Wachovia Championship, the leader board looks like this:
Jason Bohn -9
Anthony Kim -7
Dudley Hart -6
Jim Furyk -6
George Macneil -6
Carmillo Villegas -5
I have decided to go with the two youngsters in this group of player’s. Neither has won on tour yet, but they are on the verge. Kim has been knocking on the door of victory and Villegas has been close too. They are both young exciting players to watch. They are both long, full of talent, and ready for a win. It should be a great weekend of golf.
Anthony Kim - Wachovia Championship
After a great showing for most of the Verizon Heritage Classic, Kim is in the hunt again. One of his greatest assets is his flexibility. He is one of the most flexible guys on tour. Most of us could do years of yoga training and not get any where near what he can do with his body. If you watch his swing you can see that flexibility on display throughout his whole move.
For this article we are going to focus on his finish position. I am not suggesting you have to finish like he does in the video, however, he could not finish like that without being relaxed. His club almost wraps around his body. In fact the club head is pointing at the target from behind his head. Michelle Wie also had a swing like that.
The only way to get there is if you let your arms relax so that they can be swung by your body. If you are tense there is no way you can finish your swing with a nice fluid motion. Any tension in your body will cause everything to slow down. You don’t want your club to slow down. You need it to speed up!
Relax your arms like Kim does. This will certainly help you get to a better finish position. That in it self will lead to better ball striking and longer shots. I remember working with a guy who added 15 yards per iron simply by relaxing his arms. I think you can do it to. It is not easy to do. But I certainly recommend giving it a try.
Carmillo Villegas - Wachovia Championship
If you follow the PGA Tour, then you have probably seen how this guy reads putts. Talk about flexibility!!
There is a great thing that Villegas does in his swing that helps him stay in rhythm. He pauses/hesitates at the top of his back swing. He does this just before he starts his downswing. For him it helps him engage his lower body first so that he can get the right swing sequence to hit great shots.
This is a great way to stay in rhythm so that the body and club are not going to different direction with two different speeds. You need everything to work together in the proper sequence. This will lead to much better consistency.
One of the best ways to practice this is to hit half wedges, and actually come to a full stop on your back swing. This will really ingrain the feel of pausing and making sure everything is working together.
After Villegas completes his pause, he really engages his lower body, while his upper body and club follow along for the ride. He makes a great move to copy this weekend.
I hope you enjoy the coverage of the 2008 Wachovia Championship. Good luck with your practicing, playing, and watching. May you ‘Play Your Golf Dreams’ sooner with the help of Free-Golf-Lesosn.com.
