Final Full Swing Lesson
Welcome to the Full Swing Lessons for Hybrid Golf Clubs. This is the Lesson #6: Full Swing Lesson. This lesson is designed to put it all together to make a nice, full, fluid motion that helps create more distance and accuracy for your game.
The big buzz in technology and club construction over the last couple of years has been about the hybrid. There is no doubt that these clubs are easier to play than long irons. We can hit them higher, straighter, and farther. Three things that will help you lower your scores.
This lesson finishes off what you have practiced during the previous five lessons. It takes a little longer following each lesson in sequence, however, your patience and practice should show in your results. One thing to note as we head into the final lesson for the hybrid golf clubs. Please keep your muscles relaxed while you are making your swing. It's harder to do as we make a full swing, but tension saps power very quickly. The more relaxed your muscles can be while maintaining control of your golf club the longer and straighter your shots will be.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Address

- It is very important that you have a solid setup position before you start trying to make swing changes, or start building your golf swing. You can not take advantage of a great golf swing with a poor setup position.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Take Away

- Turn your shoulders and chest to maintain your triangle.
- Your club should be parallel to the ground in line with your toes.
- There should be very little change in your weight distribution.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Set Swing
- Please see the Lesson #3 for the Hybrid: Set Swing Backswing for more details on how to make a great turn to get to this position.
- At the set swing position your left arm should be parallel to the ground.
- If your hands and wrists are relaxed (remember this game needs to be played relaxed)...then your wrists should hinge naturally so that your club and arm for an 'L'.
- The key to getting to a good set swing position is to make sure that your shoulders and chest are turning the whole time. If they are then your hands will be almost in front of your chest, and your chest will be fully turned away from your target.
- Your right knee should stay flexed throughout your backswing.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Top Backswing
- To get to the top of your backswing from the set swing position...all you need to do is to continue turning your chest and shoulders.
- You should stop your backswing when you can't keep your turn moving comfortably. Your flexibility will dictate how long your backswing will be. You don't need a super long backswing to hit it far. Allen Doyle from the Champions Tour has a very short backswing and he hits it plenty long. Once you start to try and go beyond your own level of flexibility your club will get off line and it makes it very hard to hit the ball consistently.
- Your lower body should stay relaxed and simply turn as it needs to by following your upper body. If you tighten up your legs and hips it will cause your club to get off line. Remember...golf needs to be played relaxed.
- Your weight should stay centered between your feet. You can see how my shoulder turn does not go past the middle of my feet. That helps keep your balance throughout your swing. If you do that you will create a little more flex in your left knee and it should point at your ball. If your weight shifts too much towards your right foot then your left knee will collapse and point towards your right foot. This will create a lot of extra movement during your swing, which can play havoc on your timing and consistency.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Downswing Transition
- Your initial move back to your golf ball should be as simple as throwing a ball. Please see Throwing the Ball Lesson for more details.
- Once you have reached the top of your backswing, you need to start moving back towards your ball. When making the transition from backswing to downswing, remember that golf is a game of rhythm and timing.
- In order to keep your rhythm...don't change speeds. You body should turn the same speed going both directions. Changing speeds will throw your club offline and lead to poor contact.
- The downswing should start from the ground up. This means it should start from your feet. Starting from your feet will put your swing in the right sequence.
- Having a 'trigger' at the this point in the swing can be very helpful. I try to press my left heel into the ground. This gets my feet and legs into the swing first. You can see that my hips are already back to being the same as they were at address. However my back and chest are still turned away from the ball. This is easy power. We like easy power. This is a great example of how the downswing starts form the ground up...feet then hips then chest and shoulders.
- You must keep your arms and hands relaxed. If you do they will literally 'fall' into the proper position going down. When you press your left foot into the ground and your arms are relaxed they will move together. If you have tension in your upper body then your lower body will move but leave your arms and club behind. You need to keep your body moving together in order to create consistent contact.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Half-Way Down
- After pressing your foot into the ground, it is just a matter of unwinding your hips and chest. Make sure you do this all at the same time. You don't want your hips to move without your chest, or either to move without your arms and club.
- Remember how the Set Swing was also called the 'L' swing. To create power you want to maintain that 'L' until just before impact. You can see how your 'L' is still intact as you are making your move to the ball. This can only happen if you use your body to make your swing. If you try to swing the club by moving your hands alone...you will automatically lose your 'L' and your power.
- To keep your club on plane (meaning on line to your ball) you must keep your right elbow close to your body. Much like if you were to skip a stone across the water. As you step into the throw your right elbow tucks in against your side. This is big part of your downswing because it will help maintain your 'L' for power, and keep your club on line for accuracy. If you start your downswing with your arms and hands then your elbow will drift away from your side and you will hit weaker shots that will fade...slice.
- You can see in the picture that my weight has shifted a little more onto my left foot because my right foot is rolling onto it's instep.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Impact
- Impact is the split second during your golf swing in which the club makes contact with the ball. All the movement your body does during your backswing and downswing, are simply trying to setup for a good impact position. If you can deliver your club onto the back of your ball properly...you are going to hit great shots.
- There is a big difference between good contact and proper contact. Good contact will get you around the golf course...proper contact will help you shoot your dream scores. Let's try and work on making proper contact.
- To make proper contact you will want to make sure that the back of your left hand is flat and facing your target. This is critical for making proper contact. It is the only way for your club to hit your ball at the proper angle so that you can use the natural loft of your club. A common fault is having the the left wrist break towards the target. This increases the loft of your club and makes you hit the ball higher and shorter than it should. A great drill is to put a ruler on the back of your left wrist and make parallel to parallel swings. The ruler will help keep your wrist in place.
- After pressing your left foot into the ground on your downswing your weight should naturally move onto your left foot. This is because at impact your right knee should be flexing and moving towards your ball. This will make your right foot roll onto it's instep. These two things will help drive your weight forward and through your shot.
- The second picture is taken from the target side. The key thing to note looking at the impact position from this angle is how open your hips will be to your target. Notice how your hips will almost be facing your target already, even though you are only just at impact. This position helps generate a lot of power as well as proper contact.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Parallel Follow Through
- This position should virtually mirror your backswing. Your club should be parallel to the ground with the toe of your club pointing up to the sky.
- This time your right wrist should be flat, as if you were shaking hands with someone. If your hand is in the position to receive a 'low five' from someone then you are out of position, and you will have unnaturally increased the loft of your club.
- Almost all your weight should be on your left foot. So much so that you should feel the pressure of your weight on the target side edges of your left shoe.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Set Swing Follow Through
- This should be almost a mirror of your backswing. This time your right arm should be straight and parallel to the ground, while your left arm folds and stays close to your body.
- Almost all your weight should be on your left foot and you should be rolling up onto the toes of your right foot.
- Since your hips are turning through your shot, your left leg will naturally pull away from your target line and will be almost straight. This is a good thing because it is creating room for your club to swing though your ball. You may have also heard that it is good to 'hit against a firm left side'. Well the straightening of your left leg will help create that firm side which does lead to more power.
- The most over used statement in golf is 'Keep your head down'. I have never said that in a lesson. Yes...you do need to keep your eye on your ball. However, keeping your head down can restrict movement of your follow through. If your head and neck muscles are relaxed then they should rotate naturally with your body. This will give you a much more free flowing motion.
- Make sure that your hips and chest keep rotating through your swing. If they stop turning you will lose a lot a power and consistency. If you have turned them properly then your belt buckle (or zipper if you are not wearing a belt) will almost be facing your target.
- You can see in this picture how your left leg straightens and pulls back while your right knee flexes and moves toward where you ball was. This is simply opposite of your backswing move. Once again...a mirror image.
- The most important part of the follow through is maintaining your spine angle. This is the angle between your hips and back. It should remain the same as it was at address. If you keep the same angle then you are much more likely to hit solid shots. If that angle changes, especially getting more vertical (commentators often call it coming out of your shot) you will end up hitting a lot of weak shots to the right.
- If you go back to the Throwing the Ball Lesson you will notice that I was throwing the ball underneath a club held about belt high. This was to help get the feeling of staying down through my swing so I could maintain my spine angle. Keep this image in mind and it will help you make solid contact.
Hybrid Golf Clubs : Finish
- At the finish position all your weight should be on your left foot. In fact you should be rolling to the outside edge of your left foot. You can see in the picture how my instep in just slightly off the ground.
- Your right foot should be up on it's tip toe.
- Being relaxed allows you to make a fuller finish. If your muscles are relaxed through your swing then your hands can finish over your left shoulder. Your right shoulder can then also finish closer to the target than your left shoulder. This will allow you to use all the power you generated in your backswing.
- From this view you can see that I have used my body so much during the swing that my belt buckle is actually pointed to the left of my target. This shows that you want to fully unwind your hips, shoulders and chest to hit great golf shots.
- You want to be well balanced by having all your weight finish on your left foot.
- Your hands and arms should stay relaxed throughout your whole swing. If they are then your hands will almost automatically finish over your left shoulder. If you have tension your swing will most likely be shortened and less fluid.

There is a huge tendency for people to swing harder when they have a longer club in their hands. Please try to avoid this...it does not help your cause. Hybrid golf clubs are designed to hit the ball farther for you. You don't need to swing harder to make that happen.
