The 2008 EDS Byron Nelson Video Golf Tips

The 2008 EDS Byron Nelson has been playing tougher this year with the course changes and the conditions. No one was quite sure what to expect as all the greens had been redesigned. Apparently it is playing like a course in Australia as 3 of the top 4 represent that country. This is what the top of the leader board looks like after 2 rounds:

  • Adam Scott -5
  • Mark Hensby -4
  • Scott McCarron -4
  • Matthew Goggin -4
  • Ryan Moore -3

There are so many players still in the tournament that the 3rd round will be very important. Any player who does not make a couple of birdies will be past and left behind for the final round. It should be an exciting couple of days as the players get a good test.

Adam Scott - 2008 EDS Byron Nelson

Scott is a very accomplished player who has won some of the biggest tournaments without winning a major. He is starting to be mentioned in that terrible category of best players who have not yet won a major. He has been constantly compared to Tiger with regards to swing styles. However those comparisons have eased a little as Tiger has gone through he recent changes with Hank Haney. Scott still works with Butch Harmon.

I know the picture quality of the video is not great, but the slow motion and the camera angle are awesome. Adam Scott uses is lower body really well and is presented very well in this video.

When you watch this video and the coverage this weekend watch how much he leads the down swing with his lower body. This is an absolute must for hitting great shots. When he starts he motion back to the golf ball he starts by from his left foot. Watch how he will get his left knee over his left foot. This shows how he is using his lower body to hit the shot.

A second key to using the lower body is maintaining a relaxed upper body. If you do this then your arms and club will ‘fall’ into position. Watch how Scott does this. When he gets his arms to fall so that his hands are in front of his chest he will hit with tremendous power and accuracy.

These are two great things to emulate from Adam’s swing.

Scott McCarron - 2008 EDS Byron Nelson

His right leg in his back swing is awesome. It does not move. It is rock solid. If you can keep you right leg like McCarron’s then you are going to have a well balanced swing. From the front view it does not even look like it moves. That is the image you want to take with you. In reality it does move a little because the right hip turns behind you. However, from just below the hip to the end of your toes, your right leg should not move in the back swing.

Ryan Moore - 2008 EDS Byron Nelson

Moore is another young gun American who is looking to live up to the pressure of following Tiger Woods. That in itself is no easy task. He certainly has the game to do it, and it just a question of when he will make his break through. Maybe it will be this weekend.

I really like what he does on his pitch shots. He does a couple of things that would really help everyone’s game. He takes a couple of practice swings during his pre-shot routine. The key is that he makes those practice swings mean something. He is rehearsing the length of swing he is going to make because he knows that the longer the swing he makes the farther the ball will go. When he goes to hit his shot he tries to make the same length swing as he practiced. This gives him the best opportunity to hit the ball the proper distance.

When he is trying to control distance with his wedges watch how he gets his club pointing to the sky on his back swing. This is important because it means he is hinging his wrists properly. You want to have the club pointing at the sky to hit this shot. This helps get great contact. Great contact is what you need for controlling distance and getting the ball close to the hole from well off the green.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the 2008 EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

PGA Tour Winner Quick Lesson

Congratulations to Steve Stricker on his victory at the 2012 Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

I believe the commentators said he has won 9 times in his 40s. That is amazing!I also agree with Sir Nick and Johnny Miller that his swing will be copied in the future. Technology has reduced the need for hand action in the golf swing to generate power. Watch the old videos of Bobby Jones to see how much action he created compared to that of Steve Stricker.

A great objective for any player is to eliminate any unnecessary movement. Stricker does a great job of that. His hands stay very quiet on the backswing. His wrists hardly hinge at the top of his backswing. You can see from the above video that his backswing is all shoulder turn.

His downswing starts from the hips and he simply turns everything through the golf ball at the same time. His hands and wrists release naturally without any effort. This is a great way to have a consistent rhythm through the golf ball on every shot. This swing delivers enough power to win on Tour.

European Tour Winner Quick Lesson

Congratulations to Louis Oosthuizen and his victory at the 2012 Africa Open.

Louis burst onto the scene with his dominating performance at the Open Championship. Many have predicted multiple wins for this player. His victory this past weekend is likely one of many to come.

In the video above pay really close attention to when the video ends. Take a look at his left foot. Notice how all his weight his on his left heel. This is a great sign that he has cleared his hips properly.

One of the key reasons for starting the downswing with your lower body is to clear your hips out of the way to create more room for your arms to swing through impact. It is a great indicator as to how well you cleared your hips, when almost all your weight is on your heel.

If your weight is leaning on you toes or even the middle of your foot then you have not rotated and cleared your hips enough through your downswing and past impact. You really want to feel the pressure of your weight on your heel like Oosthuizen.

Make sure you start your downswing with your lower body. At the top of your backswing; either pull your left knee or your left hip (right handed player) towards the target. Also make sure your hips keep rotating through impact and into your finish position with your weight on the heel.
